Queensland turns 150 (2009)—That is 150 years of self-determination for this State. Sunny Queensland, Rainy Queensland, Drought ridden Queensland, but above all the State that holds its head up high and says “Count us, we are here to stay”
The city of Charters Towers has a lot of history. It has been gazetted since 1872 and in 1902 was the second largest city in Queensland. People travel from far and wide to soak up its historic sights and stories.
We have the largest Cricket Festival in the Southern Hemisphere, the Second largest Country Music Festival, and are known as the Capital of Education. We are also known as the ‘Gateway to the West’ and ‘The Gateway to the Outback’ so it is our pleasure to introduce to our great town, the inaugural “Gateway to Expression Festival 2009”. We are envisioning this being a biennial festival.
The Inaugural Festival is to be held on the long weekend of June 5th - 8th 2009, which not only coincides with the celebration of Queensland's 150th year but also Queensland day on 6th June 2009.
Our aim is to bring together a wide community of people to join the entertainment, workshops, idea sharing, story telling and general socializing. We are planning projects such as, National speakers, Indigenous Storytelling, Dancing from the Islands,; and Workshops with well-known authors on Novel writing, Poetry, Yarn spinning, Playwriting and performance to name but a few.
