Peter Watt, famous Australian author and our first patron, supported us from the outset with books to raffle and workshops on the writing and publishing process, March 2007, just one month or so after we became established. Our name reflects our thanks to him by celebrating his first book “Cry of the Curlew”. |

About Us |
|
Established February 2007—Incorporated June 2008
Originally formed to provide a supportive environment for local budding writers, while still adhering to this basis we now have a much broader platform. We aim to support, encourage and promote local and regional writers to explore and express themselves in all aspects and genre of writing leading to publication if desired. With that in mind we hold an annual competition, The Siriol Kate Giffney Literary Awards and next year (2009) we will be hosting the Gateway to Expression arts festival here in Charters Towers. This will become a biennial event and every other year we will be hosting a writers’ retreat. We have a number of self-published authors, others under serious consideration for main-stream publishing and award winning poets among our number. We meet weekly (It is not required that you attend each meeting, though we would like to see you as often as possible), on Monday nights at 7:30 p.m. in The Treehouse at The Neighbourhood Centre, front—129 Mosman St and back– 24 Mill Lane. (Again, see bar at left for details on how to join and/or subscribe to our monthly newsletter.) We generally have a creative writing exercise and reading, then members read recent works for comment and critique. We usually finish about 9:30 pm. Sometimes the Executive meets following this. |
